Application engines from scratch: a spreadsheet, rich text, paint, draw, CAD, editors and more
What applications share, written from scratch for teaching: a spreadsheet's engine and its view, rich text laid out on pages, line breaking by Knuth and Plass, MacPaint's bitmap and Deluxe Paint's palette, MacDraw's figures, a document with undo and a clipboard, CAD (Sketchpad, AutoCAD, SketchUp), a 3D modeller, the text editors (vi, Emacs, Turbo Pascal's IDE), a block editor's geometry, a web page's layout, a planetarium's astronomy, iCalendar and vCard, money. None of them draws with the Playground; each is a library of its own, tiny_appkits.<name>.
